Special Use Facilities

The Cal Poly Plant Conservatory is under the direction of Professor Matthew Ritter. The large glasshouse facility located in the center of the Cal Poly campus provides approximately 2000 square feet of growing space under glass and an additonal 500 square feet under lath for growing materials for labs and research. Several isolation rooms are used to grow materials for Plant Pathology, Virology, and Nematology labs. The primary mission of the Cal Poly Plant Conservatory is to maintain a diverse, well-documented, and accurately labeled living plant collection supporting and enhancing teaching and research for the faculty and students of Cal Poly. A secondary goal of the Conservatory is to help foster education about plant biology and conservation of rare species through support of community outreach programs.

The Undergraduate Biotechnology Laboratory (UBL) is available year-round for undergraduate research as well as for development of in-class course-specific laboratory exercises.

The Microscope Study Room in room 460 of Fisher Hall has dissecting and compound microscopes for student use from 8 am to 4 pm. Arrangements can be made to use advanced specialized microscopes.

The Environmental Biotechnology Institute (EBI) is developing biological tools to address environmental concerns through collaborative interdisciplinary research and education. The goal is to assess the well-being of ecosystems, transform pollutants into benign substances, generate biodegradable substances from renewable resources and develop environmentally safe manufacturing and disposal processes.

The Bioinformatics Computer Lab located in Room 258 Fisher Hall has workstations running under Mac OS-X and Windows XP. A flatbed Scanner, 35mm slide scanner and 35 mm Film Recorder are available for special project use, and laptops and Data projectors are available for classroom use.

The Biological Sciences Department houses a Human Cadaver Lab used in anatomy courses. The lab has a male cadaver and a female cadaver, which are replaced every three years. The lab embraces Cal Poly's "Learn by Doing" motto by allowing undergraduate students to perform all prosections, an opportunity not available at most other universities.
