1. Learn by Doing Lab: Gross Anatomy (SCM 302)
The Learn by Doing Lab program is intended for undergraduates exploring science teaching or who want to build skills in communicating concepts in human anatomy to non-scientists. “Anatomy Ambassadors” who are selected for this Gross Anatomy section of SCM 302 engage high school students in learning activities using human cadaver specimens that were prepared by Cal Poly students!
The Gross Anatomy section of SCM 302 operates from 8:00am-Noon every Friday of the Winter and Spring quarters. Applicants to this Gross Anatomy section of SCM 302 must have earned a grade of C or better in a college anatomy or/and physiology course. Selection to the program is at the discretion of the instructor.
APPLICATION PERIOD: Closed. Applications for AY 2024-25 will open at the start of the Fall '24 quarter.
TO APPLY: Submit your application using this online form. CURRENTLY CLOSED.
FOR MORE INFO: Please email Dr. Jones: mjones99@calpoly.edu and visit the Learn By Doing Lab website at the Center For Excellence in Science and Mathematics Educations (CESAME)

2. Advanced Human Gross Anatomy (BIO S411)
Students enrolled in BIO S411 have the unique opportunity to learn and perform human cadaver dissection and complete an advanced study of regional human anatomy. During this “First Patient” experience, students will perform a whole-body dissection under the guidance of a medical professional.
This competitive upper division summer elective is intended for matriculated Cal Poly students who are pursuing a clinical or academic career that requires advanced knowledge of human form. Students must have earned a grade of C or better in a college anatomy or/and physiology course. Graduates of BIO S411 rank in the top percentile of first-year student cohorts at ranked medical and clinical professional schools!
Advanced Human Gross Anatomy is scheduled for the summer term (specific dates TBD) and has two sections: (Section 01) M-R 8:00am-11:am and (Section 02) M-R 12:00pm-3:00pm. Selection for this class is competitive and at the discretion of the instructor.

3. Senior Research Project: Clinically Oriented Anatomy (BIO 462)
Students enrolled in this section of BIO 462 will develop and execute a clinically oriented study of anatomical concepts that includes human cadaver dissection, under the supervision of Dr. Jones. For consideration, teams of two senior undergraduates, who have successfully completed a college anatomy or physiology course, must conceptualize, and propose projects that study human anatomy in a clinical context.
The project’s contextual focus may range from (but are not limited to): in-depth regional or systems-based study, anatomical variants or developmental anatomy, the impact of disease and injury on anatomy and relevant clinical or surgical interventions to address pathology. Examples of successful past projects include:
- Biomechanical study and 3D printing of a musculoskeletal finger model, used to train Rush University Occupational Therapy students in hand anatomy!
- Complete hysterectomy for study of internal female reproductive anatomy, on display for our A&P students and the Learn by Doing Lab program!
- Complete laminectomy and brain dissection for study of neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders, presented at the Bailey College Student Research Conference 2023!
- Dissection of joints injured in falls and publication of a Critically Appraised Topic (CAT) review paper on balance training to prevent falls in persons with Dementia, Journal of Aging Research Reviews.
